Another school year is (almost) in the books and nostalgic memories of childhood summer reading programs are drifting into our minds with the summer breeze.
Do you remember doing summer reading challenges as a kid? Reading what felt like countless pages during an endless summer to earn a chance to attend a puppet show or pizza party?
Let’s be real. Being a library kid was the best.
In the spirit of summer reading, we decided to put together our own challenge that is focused on banned books. We created this printable challenge tracker so you can mark your progress as you go.
You are invited to join our challenge to read 20 banned or challenged children’s books OR 1,000 pages of banned books for any age! Color in a circle each time you read a picture book or 50 pages.
Bonus activity: Head down to your local library and join one of their summer programming events!
Every week we’ll share the books that our family is reading. Join us on Instagram, Bluesky, or Tiktok to follow along. As parents of young children, we can’t wait to get them into summer reading too!
While we wish we could grab a slice of pizza with all of you at the end (that would honestly be so much fun), logistically we’re a little too spread out for that. So we’re opening our subscriber chat for summer reading and we want to hear all about the books that you enjoy reading this summer! Let us know in the chat or mention us on social media.

Now is also a great time to catch up on books previously featured in Once Upon a Ban.
